144 dogs queued for the Fun Dog Show

Fun Dog Show raises £1000 for Rescue Dogs

A massive THANK YOU to everyone who attended our Fun Dog Show on Sunday 24th September 2017.

We had 144 dogs on the day – just brilliant – and we raised nearly £1000 on the day. Watch out for the official photographs coming soon.

Fun Dog Show – Fun Facts

We love looking through the fun dog show registration papers after the event and hope you enjoy these fun facts:

🐶Total number of dogs registered = 144
🐶There were 37 rescue dogs
🐶There were 38 dogs aged under 1 year; the youngest was a Cockerpoo called Ruby
🐶There were 5 dogs aged over 10; the oldest was a lovely little Jack Russell called Poppy
🐶Poppy was also the most popular name. There were 4 of them
🐶The top three breeds were
12 – Chihuahua
8 – Labrador
7 – Springer Spaniel
🐶We had 25 cross breeds where no specific name was given and an additional 18 named crosses
🐶The most unusual name was Dubhlainn (pronounced Dove-Lin). It is an Irish word meaning Black Sword and belonged to a beautiful Labrador
🐶We had 2 of the most unusual breed – a Finnish Lapphund. These are traditionally used to herd reindeer and they were beautifully represented by 8 month old Aspen and 3 year old Keela

One young lady went away very happy with one more dog than she arrived with ❤️❤️ The best behaved dog of the day – his name was correctly guessed as Rocky by young dog lover Amber.

Off to visit the Cyprus dogs

This is why we do what we do.

Two of our team are self-funding a trip to Cyprus on 14th June and SOS is one of the sites we will be visiting.

We want to take as much of the donated goods with us as we can, we need YOUR help to do so.

Everything you donate goes to help dogs like these and that why sending so many doggy goods over is so important.

Rescue Dog – our mission to help

On 14th June, our co-founder Sue Nuttall and Take Away The Tears friend Kellie Wills are self-funding a trip to Cyprus to see how the support TATT provides is helping on the ground. They have booked additional luggage space and hope to fill suitcases with:

  1. Flea/tick treatments
  2. Wormers
  3. Dog treats and toys
  4. And they will be buying food once over there to help feed the street dogs.

You can help by donating treatments, treats or toys and dropping them off at a number of places:-

  • The Financial Planning Centre, 75-79 Howard Street, North Shields
  • Gosforth Pets & Aquatics, Wansbeck Road, NE3 3HQ
  • Four Pays Hydrotherapy, Whitehouse Farm Centre, Morpeth, NE61 6AW
  • Happy Planet Creative Arts CIC, 3 Ilfracombe Gardens, Whitley Bay, NE26 3ND
  • Take Away The Tears HQ – Hedgehog Cottage, North East Mason Farm, Seaton Burn NE13 6DN

You can buy online and have them delivered direct to TATT HQ at the address above.

You can donate a monetary gift here.

We can also arrange collection if required.

We’d be very grateful if you’d share to try and get those suitcases as full as possible.

Thank you.

Please donate what you can.  Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Leishmaniasis Kills – Help Save A Life

Leishmaniasis

Leishmaniasis kills – please help save a life

It costs a minimum of £14 to buy a Scalibor Collar which will prevent a dog getting bitten by Sand Flies. They are the main transmitter of Leishmaniasis.

You can help us take as many collars across as possible when we visit Cyprus in June. Donate now and consequently help save a life .

What is Canine Leishmaniasis?

Canine leishmaniasis (LEESH-ma-NIGH-ah-sis) is a zoonotic disease caused by Leishmania parasites transmitted by the bite of an infected phlebotomine sandfly.

Canine leishmaniasis was first identified in Europe in 1903, and in 1940. Thought of as a disease only found near the Mediterranean basin, 2008 research claims new findings are evidence that canine leishmaniasis is currently expanding in continental climate areas of northwestern Italy, far from the recognized disease-endemic areas along the Mediterranean coasts.

Especially relelvant to Take Away The Tears is the fact that leishmaniasis is prevalent in Cyprus.  Eppey Gunn describes her experience:

Leishmaniasis

Eppey’s dog Amelia was found with Leishmaniasis

“Leishmaniasis is the result of sandfly bite on a dog, not the type you can get in the UK.

The so simple solution is to use a collar such as Scalibor or Seresto, but many out here do not bother to protect their dogs, especially their hunting dogs.

Many rescue groups end up with those sick dogs, flung out as they are sick and to some they are ‘just dogs’!

Currently I have 2 such furbabies; one is a failed foster, Princess Amelia, who came to me last August – she is family now. The other is a hunting dog who turned up at my gate so sick and starved.

Both have had treatment and both doing very well….but all for the sake of a collar!! This is how Amelia was found…I am posting this to raise awareness…so many dog rescues out here just can’t afford to provide collars as they have to raise money for food, vet bills, medications, shelter etc etc.”

Cyprus delighted to receive donations!

Read what some of the recipients of the generously donated doggy goods had to say.

  • “SOS would like to send their huge thanks to Sue Nuttall and her supporters for arranging and sending this absolutely massive palette of doggy stuff, which is coming in extremely handy. You are AMAZING!!!”
  • Marina Nicolaou says, “Thank you soooo much to everyone for supporting our doggies!!!! With your kind donations many, many doggies will have a nice bed to sleep and yummy food and treats and warm blankets…making their lives better whilst waiting to find their loving homes!!! Thank you to Take Away The Tears and the wonderful Sue Nuttall for making this happen!!!! You have given all the furry babies soooo much happiness xxx”
  • “What a fantastic day, airport run with 5 dogs in total flying to new homes and then went and collected a pallet of donated goods for our pound dogs. Blown away with the generosity of Sue Nuttall and the group Take Away The Tears team and can’t thank them enough for selecting Paralimni Dog Pound to be one of the groups to benefit. Huge thank you to everyone who donated items to send to Cyprus. We’ve received dry food, tinned food, dog bowls, leads, collars, harnesses, bedding, plastic dog beds which will be great when the new pound is finished! Plus so much more stuff to go through yet the list is not finished. Thank you on behalf of all the volunteers for your generosity. Thank you also to Alan Fryer, Chris Cooke AND Zena Cooke for your help today.
